Notes On // Fall Candles

I never love a candle more than I do in the fall and winter months.

I mean, let’s be honest, once the temperature starts dropping, nothing is quite as good as the scent of a warm, woodsy, spiced, sultry, smoky candle burning. It’s just so cozy and calming, and at a time when the weather is cold and gray and things are hectic, cozy and calming is exactly what is needed.

Most fall days, you’ll find one of my favorite seasonal scents burning from dawn to dusk. I’ll light it in the morning, before I turn on a mellow playlist (I’m currently loving this one) and make my coffee. Then I’ll move the candle with me throughout my day, from my desk while I’m working, to the coffee table next to the couch, where I’ll end my day watching tv or reading. I just love the way it sets the mood, creates a relaxing environment and even provides a mental escape to different scent-induced fall memories throughout the day. Keep reading to find out what fall candles I’m currently burning and loving.

FALL CANDLES // 2020

I’m not usually into super seasonal scents like pumpkin or apple because they can be almost too fake or too sweet, but I happened to randomly stumble upon this one in one of my favorite local shops and I was instantly obsessed. It smells like pumpkin-meets-sugar-cookies in the best way possible, and with none of the sickly sweetness. It comes in two sizes, is made from soy wax and cotton wicks (both more sustainable options) and this small business develops and pours their candles all right in Nashville, TN.

If you’ve been around my site/Instagram for the past year or so, you’ve probably seen me mention this female-owned + operated Bermuda-based candle company several times. I just love how eco-friendly these are, from the soy wax and cotton candle wicks, to the recycled beer bottles that they’re poured into and the recycled cork that’s placed on top. All of the scents are ones that embody the scents and flavors found throughout Bermuda, including this one, which is the perfect blend of bright citrus, sweet apple + vanilla, fall spices and just the faintest touch of a woodsy musk. The overall scent isn’t overpowering at all, but instead light and inviting and perfect for daytime burning.

This candle is what all of my smoky, woodsy candle dreams are made of. It’s hard to find a candle that isn’t too smoky, or so woodsy that it smells more like a Christmas candle, but somehow this one just gets it right. It’s absolute fall perfection. Lighting it instantly transports you hearthside, to the coziest of fires, in a little cabin tucked away in forest full of fall foliage. Aka if you don’t have a fireplace, but dream of being by one, or you’re craving a fall getaway but can’t take one, this is the candle for you.

This is a well-loved (and well-worn, as you can probably see from the peeling label) candle. It’s another spicy, smoky fall favorite, and one that I truly cherish. While the Embers candle I mentioned above is more woodsy/smoky, I would say this one is more spicy/sultry/smoky. The black tin that I have is currently sold out (which tells you just how long I’ve been savoring this one), but it is available in a beautiful (and much more giftable ) ceramic container.

This is the only candle on my list that isn’t from a small and/or female-owned business, but I wanted to be sure to include an option that was accessible (both shopping and price-point) to everyone, and I have to say, this one does not disappoint. The burn time is great, the scent is woodsy, warm and inviting, it fills the room and isn’t overpowering, and, while it comes in several different sizes at several different price points, I think this large ceramic one will be perfect for re-purposing and re-using once I’m done with the candle.
