Staying Healthy While Traveling

Staying Healthy While Traveling

I'll be the first to admit, when I'm on vacation, I like to indulge. I like to try local favorites, things that are unique, and, of course, always dessert. If it's one thing you can count, it's that I will not be the girl living off of fruits and vegetable for the entirety of a trip. That being said, I also don't want to be the girl who can't fit into her pants after 7 days of being away. So, as with everything in life, I've learned that saying healthy while traveling is all about a balancing act. Read on to see how I stay healthy on the go-

1. Fit in exercise when you can // We were going almost non-stop while in Charleston so I'm slightly embarrassed to say that I skipped this step for the most part, but typically I like to do a couple of my desk exercises in my hotel room. They work perfectly with a hotel desk, chair, and the small space limitations.

2. Walk everywhere (aka putting tip 1 into action)// Of course,  this is easier said than done in some places. New York, Vegas, Miami, Charleston, they are all very walkable cities and you can often get wherever you need to go with your own 2 feet. If you aren't in as walkable of a city, however, think about other activities you can do that will incorporate walking. Perhaps visiting an art museum, or taking a walking tour instead of one on a bus/boat/carriage,etc. Also, for proof that I did not skip out of this tip like I did tip 1, I'm including this picture of me & Luci, snapped by Grace, strolling along in one of Charleston's plantation.

3. Split meals (or at least dessert)// This is a rule I typically adhere to in every day life, but I especially make sure to do it on vacation. Not only is it helping you not to be wasteful (I can never finish a full meal by myself), but it also helps you save some calories on all those indulgent vacation treats.

4. Carry healthy snacks with you // If you haven't figured it out by now, I'm always hungry. Like always. Which means I like to snack. But snacking on vacation is a whole different ball game. The options available are usually baked goods, an entire meal, or something from a convenience store, none of which are healthy or are able to sustain you with energy (which is obviously needed for all those tourist activities!). For this reason, I make sure to always keep some healthy snacks on hand (as you probably saw on Instagram). Things like fruit, nuts, and snack mix are all great options, but my favorite (which is almost always guaranteed to be in my bag, traveling or not) are KIND bars. The flavor combos are indulgent, allowing me to satisfy my cravings, but the bars are packed with nuts and fruit and other natural ingredients (whose names I can all pronounce).

5.  It's all about balance // Again, this is a rule that I typically abide by in every day life, but especially around vacation time. Both before and after a trip, I make sure to fill up on lots of fruits, veggies and healthy proteins, then I won't feel so guilty if I eat less healthy while I'm away. As I've mentioned, I'm all for indulging while on vacation, but I make a conscious effort to fit in fruits and vegetables whenever I can. For example, on a day where I knew our lunch and dinner were both going to be more indulgent, I had eggs with salsa and spinach and a piece of fruit for breakfast. Now before you go thinking I'm a saint, I also had a donut one morning and Eggs Benedict another. But like I said, it's all about balance.
