1// Prep your skin- The day before you apply your sunless tanner, exfoliate with an oil-free scrub or a brush and shave your skin. Do not apply lotion afterwards.
2// The following day, right before you apply the tanner, do another quick dry brush exfoliation (I like to use this brush).
3// Next, apply the tanner of your choice (I like to apply it with a mitt…the self-tanner I use comes with one right in the package) starting with the bottom of your legs and working your way up. I find it best to use a small amount at a time and apply it by rubbing in quick, steady streaks, then rubbing my mitt over the area again, but this time in circular strokes. Of course, be careful around your knees, elbows and hairline, and I would suggest stopping to wash your hands once or twice throughout the process to avoid stains in-between your fingers. For my face and the back of my hands, I actually like to mix a bit of the tanner in with lotion before spreading it on, to make sure it’s not as dark.
I have to take a second here to give a special shoutout to my favorite sunless tanner, NKD SKN. I’ve been actively using sunless tanner since I was in high school, but once I developed my skin allergies a few years back, my sunless tanners had to go, along with almost all my other beauty products. I was convinced I’d never be using a sunless tanner again, or at least one that was natural, affordable and actually worked. All that changed when I was introduced to NKD SKN. Seeing nothing on the label that I was allergic to, I skeptically gave the product a try. Miracle of all miracles my skin didn’t freak out. And even more of a miracle, the product didn’t smell bad, didn’t stain, didn’t feel weird on my skin, dried instantly and I actually looked tan. Just to give you an idea of how realistically tan I looked, I had people stopping me left and right asking me where I had just vacationed. Still not convinced? I applied some of the tanner to a spot that didn’t get much sun in Mexico. The once-pale spot magically disappeared, blending in with my natural tan. Now, I can’t even tell which is real and which is faux. In other words, this stuff is amazing. Get it now. Thank me later. (FYI, I use the Tinted Tan Mousse in medium.)
4// Once the tanner has set for about an hour, apply lotion or oil. Avoid showering or working out for at least 24 hours.
5// To make your tan last, continue applying lotion or oil every morning, and every evening apply a gradual glow lotion. Again, I turn to NKD SKN for this. I use their Gradual Glow lotion daily, even if I don’t have time to do the whole sunless tanning process, just to make sure I always maintain some kind of color. And just like that you’ll have golden glowing skin all year long!
I should note that this post is not sponsored, I truly am just obsessed with the NKD SKN products. However, I have teamed up with them for something fun! This weekend I’ll be taking over their Instagram account AND we’ll be hosting an Instagram-only contest to win one NKD SKN product package for you and one for a best friend. Glowing skin will be just one easy entry (and these sunless tanning tips) away!
