4×4 Style-What To Wear To A Wedding

What to wear to a wedding

Wedding season is upon….and graduation season….and beach season….and grilling season….and well, you know. I’m exhausted just looking at that list! What’s even more exhausting is figuring out what to wear. But no need to worry! Grace, Jealeyni, Luci and I are back with our monthly series 4×4 Style and this time we’re helping you figure out-what should I wear to a wedding?

What to wear to a formal wedding

I have never personally been to a formal wedding (I actually haven’t been to many weddings period), but that doesn’t stop a girl from dreaming about all the glamorous things she could wear if she got invited to said wedding. I can envision myself now draped in some form of a Chanel gown and dazzling in Tiffany jewels with pretty red-bottomed shoes on my feet…..back to reality, Alyssa! Back. To. Reality. Oh hey Zara dress! I think you and my budget will get along a lot better!!

So are we all back down from the couture clouds now? Good! Let’s go over a few rules for what to wear to a wedding that requires formal attire—-

-DON’T wear white. I hope this would go without saying (do I even have to tell you why?!), but never the less, I have seen people where white to a wedding. Don’t do it, just don’t!

-DO wear black or other dark shades. Personally, I would avoid bright colors or crazy prints or anything to overpowering for a formal event. Black is always a safe and trusty option that you can’t go wrong with and it instantly makes you look put together.

-DON’T wear anything showy, flashy, or trashy and nothing too short (in a dream world all dresses for a formal event would be floor length).

-DO wear classic silhouettes.

-DON’T overdo it with the jewels. If there is ever a time to limit your accessories, this is it. You can wear big sparkly earrings (like I did) but don’t do earrings, a necklace, and a huge arm party. I think art deco pieces (I’m obsessed with all of these right now) make especially good formal jewelry.

-DO add a pop of color with your nail polish and/or lipstick. For winter, I like to do reds, and for summertime I like coral shades (similar to my nails and lips in the pictures).

Not going to a formal wedding? Boho in Brooklyn

If you follow me on Twitter, you may have seen recently when I put up a quote from a conversation the Mr. and I were having on our different fashion styles. The verdict was city edgy (him) and schizophrenic chic (me).

Oh, that’s not a type of style, you say? Well, have you not been reading my blog?!!??

boho outfits

I’m like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, except without the Jekyll and about 10 Hydes (writing at midnight just gives you the greatest analogies, doesn’t it?!).

In this particular look I happen to be going for the ‘Casper’ style, you know the one where you blend in to your shirt because you’re so pale…..kiddddingggg (about the style, not about how pale I am).

crop top and maxi skirtAnyways, back to boho. We took a quick break from packing to go explore the Brooklyn Flea in Williamsburg, and since hipster is not what I consider to be a style (at least not in the I-don’t-shower-I-look-homeless sense), I decided to go boho instead.

Do you have more than one style? Do you dress differently depending on where you’re going?

Normally when it comes to bright pieces like coral, I like to wear a neutral palet to let said bright color really pop. For whatever reason, however, I was just drawn to this floral pant and coral shoe combo. The floral pants ended up working out well for the choice of our shooting location (the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens), and while I got quite few stares for prancing around the wooded paths in mega high-heels, well, what can I say…it’s all part of the job, right?! To make sure I didn’t go too over-the-top, though, I kept everything else toned down, using a green jacket and a black bag to pick up the green and black in the pants.

how to wear a head piece

Fun fact of the day- if you needed one word to describe me, head strong would be it. But what does this have to do with today’s post? Welllll…….

outfit with a head pieceYou see when I go about naming a post, I often try to pin point a key piece and then use a play on words to include the name of said piece in the title. As I previously established, this head piece was just dying to be worn and is obviously the key piece of this outfit. So well I do happen to have a head strong personality, I would also say my fashion is a bit head strong, so the head strong title and head piece was basically meant to be.

Glam Boutique jewelryDidn’t know you were going to get an english/grammar/blogging lesson today did ya?! Well good things come to those who wait (or read to the end of a blog post). Just for hearing me ramble, you can take 15% off anything at Glam Boutique using the code RELAUNCH. They have lots of fun pieces so be your head strong self (aka ignore your hubby telling you to stop using the credit card!) and shop, shop, shop.

bracelets P.S. Doesn’t this outfit just scream “Wear me to Coachella”?! Anyone want to take me in their suitcase? I promise to let you borrow the head piece!

…in where you probably assume, due to the insinuating title, that this is what I wear to be comfy and casual.

IMG_3193

Unfortunately….it is not.

IMG_3207The reality is, I spent more time this weekend in my Uggs, over-sized sweats, and baggy tees than I did in anything else.
