Sometimes I really amaze myself with the things I come up with. Like this craft closet. Our little ol’ Brooklyn apartment has only one very tiny closet (clearly whoever designed this apartment was not a girl!) so coming up with storage solutions for EVERYTHING has been a bit of a challenge. But this, I must say, I am quite proud of.
We started with an Ikea closet we got from the ‘Free’ section of Craig’s List (yes, this exists and no, it’s not sketchball…most of the time). It had one built-in shelf and a closet rod. I added in a mini bookcase (that has somehow survived since college), and a variety of other products from around the home. Not only did it free up space in other parts of the apartment, we were able to put to use some items that had become totally useless. #Winning! Wait, do people still say that?! Anyhow, read on for all my easy and budget friendly craft closet organization ideas.
A top shelf stores my sewing machine, sewing box, jewelry making supplies, fabric, clothing waiting to be hemmed, old business cards, and the remainder of a quilt that has yet to be finished (FYI, I started it when I was 12…as you can tell, I am highly motivated to finish it).
A closet rod is the perfect place for ribbon and tape storage. It keeps everything from getting tangled, it makes for easy dispensing, and it’s a great way to use an otherwise unusable space.
All pens, pencils, markers, paintbrushes, scissors, etc are organized in their own individual containers, which includes everything from Ikea units, to old cans, to an empty Crystal Light box, and even an old cocoa powder container. Before spending money on containers, be resourceful, think outside the box and look around your home to see what you might already have.
A glass container leftover from our wedding’s candy bar doubles as storage for twine and some of my fancier ribbons.
I keep rolls of wrapping paper in the corner of the closet and I use my Hunter rain boot box to store tissue paper. On the top of the bookshelf on the right hand side, I keep glitter and gift boxes (stored inside each other) along with a small trifle dish (also a wedding candy bar remnant) filled with present toppers and bows.
The first bookshelf holds my painting supplies and spray paint on the left (not pictured) and all my paper supplies are lined up on the right.
On the bottom shelf, I have organized and separated my various knick-knacks (office supplies, stamps, glue & scrapbooking, and miscellaneous) into Ikea boxes that I spray painted gold.
